Keeping your information safe with MFA

Passwords are a tried-and-true digital security tool. However, with more dangerous cyber threats out there than ever, our personal details need a bit more protection.

That’s why Bingle is now rolling out multi-factor authentication (MFA).

What’s the problem with passwords?

Here's a troubling statistic: nearly half of all Aussies are still using easy-to-guess passwords (we might love our pets, but “Fluffy123” isn’t the guard dog we need for our online accounts). Even worse, 1.4 million of us are recycling them across ten or more services.

Meanwhile, hackers worldwide are using computers that can crack billions of passwords per second. While complex passwords – like those created by a password manager – are a good first step to safeguarding your information, usernames and passwords don’t provide enough protection.

MFA removes our dependency on passwords and is one of the simplest, most effective ways to safeguard your information online.

What is multi-factor authentication?

Instead of relying solely on a username and password, MFA uses at least two of the following identity checks:

  • Something you know, like your password.
  • Something you have, like a one-time passcode sent to your phone.
  • Something unique about you, like a fingerprint or facial recognition.

This extra security check means that, even if someone knows your password, they're still locked out of your account. They won’t be able to access your sensitive details if your password’s all they have.

Chances are, you’re already using MFA to log into your bank, your MyGov account, or social media.

Why is Bingle introducing MFA?

When you choose Bingle as your car insurer, you’ve trusted us with your personal information. We take that trust very seriously.

Your security, your way

Protecting your information online shouldn't give you a headache. That's why we're letting you set up MFA in a way that works for you.

If you don’t want to authenticate every single time, no problem - we’ll remember your device or browser for 90 days. Just keep in mind you’ll need to rerun MFA:

  • when those 90 days are up, or
  • if you try logging in from somewhere new.

Don’t worry if you:

  • don't have your mobile device,
  • need to use a different device, or
  • change your mobile number.

We'll have you covered with an email-based one-time password (OTP) instead.

Do I have to use multi-factor authentication?

While MFA isn’t mandatory, we strongly recommend enabling it to protect your sensitive information.
