What does Third Party Car Insurance cover?

Third Party Property Damage Insurance covers accidental damage to other people's cars and property caused by the use of your car. But you're not covered for any damage to your own car, as you would be with Comprehensive Car Insurance. Bingle doesn't have a Third Party Fire and Theft car insurance product, so if you want cover for this, you'll need to take up Comprehensive Car Insurance.

This cover isn't the same as Compulsory Third Party (CTP) or Green Slip insurance. CTP covers your liability to pay compensation for injuries to other people. It's a mandatory insurance that can be purchased separately when registering your car. In some Australian states, CTP might be included in your vehicle registration costs. Learn more about Compulsory Third Party (CTP) Car Insurance.

Do I need Third Party Car Insurance?

While not mandatory, Third Party Car Insurance (also known as Third Party Property Damage Insurance) is important because it provides cover for accidental damage to someone else's car or property through the use of your car. Otherwise, you'd have to cover the costs yourself, which may be very expensive.

While it's typically cheaper and doesn't offer the high level of cover that Comprehensive Car Insurance provides, it still gives you some level of protection. For example, if you have Third Party Car Insurance and hit someone's car, you'll be covered for your legal liability up to $20 million.

What is covered by Third Party Car Insurance?

What's included:

  • Accidental damage to other people's cars & property if caused by the use of your car.
  • Legal liability for accidental damage
To other people's cars and property caused by the use of your car, for up to $20 million.
  • Cover for other people driving your car
An additional excess will apply to claims if the driver of your car is under 25 years old, and/or if the driver is an unlisted household member or unlisted regular driver of your car 1.
  • Liability for damage caused by caravans and trailers
If they're being towed by your car and damage is directly related to you towing that extra set of wheels.
  • Ridesharing
If you cause accidental damage to someone's car or property while using your car for ridesharing – eg, with Uber, Lyft, Shebah or a similar service – we'll cover the damage caused 1. Just list Rideshare as the use type when you set up your policy.

What's not included:

  • Damage to your own car
But you can get cover for your own car with Comprehensive Car Insurance!
  • Injuries to you or other people
Injuries sustained in a road incident are usually covered by mandatory Compulsory Third Party (CTP) Insurance.
  • Storm, hail, and flood, and more
Third Party Car Insurance doesn't cover damage caused by fire, theft, flood, or other acts of nature, but our Comprehensive Car Insurance does.

This is just a summary, see the PDS for a full list of inclusions and exclusions.

Does Third Party Car Insurance cover hail damage?

Third Party Car Insurance only covers accidental damage caused by your car to third party vehicles or property, it does not cover damage to your car from elements like hail. If you want cover for your own car as well, consider our Comprehensive Car Insurance. This includes the liability cover you get with Third Party Car Insurance and also covers accidental loss or damage to your car caused by:

  • driving accidents; or
  • nature (e.g. storm, hail, or fire); or
  • something else (e.g. theft or malicious damage).

Is CTP the same as Third Party insurance?

Third Party Car Insurance is different to CTP (Compulsory Third Party). CTP Insurance covers your liability to other people’s injuries involving your vehicle. Third party property damage covers liability for accidental damage to other people's vehicles and property arising from the use of your car, up to $20 million.

Because we're so busy offering great car insurance at a low price, Bingle doesn't offer CTP insurance – check out AAMI or Suncorp Insurance (who, like Bingle, are also part of The Suncorp Network).

Are learner drivers insured?

Learner drivers (people on their Ls) will not need to get a separate car insurance. As long as there is a listed driver in the car, they are automatically covered under the listed driver's Bingle insurance policy.

The learner driver will then be treated as a listed driver, and an additional age excess will apply if they are under the age of 25 at the time of the incident. Once the learner driver is on their Ps you may want to list them as a driver on your policy. Otherwise an unlisted driver excess might apply.
